MFW 1st Grade - Week #10

Welcome to week #10 of MFW 1st Grade!!

BIBLE:  The bible verse for this week was "A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke."  Proverbs 13:1  We haven't exactly memorized this one yet.  With words like heeds, mocker and rebuke, Caleb is a little tentative to get it right.

We continued working in our bible reader and bible notebook with days 2 and 3 of Creation.  With the study of day 3, we learned that God created the plants and the trees.  With plants and trees comes seeds.  So, we gathered an armful of various fruits, cut them opened and counted their seeds.  He really gets into this sort of activity; cutting, counting...seeing which fruit had more.  He likes contests!  ;o)

This was our collection of fruit and supplies needed for the activity.  I would like to add that Caleb took this picture himself.  You never know, we might have another blogger in the family some day.

Then he wanted to be in the picture, so I took this one.

We took pictures of all the fruits cut up, but decided to just pick a few to post.  I think everyone knows what the inside of an apple looks like!    But, just for grins, here's a lemon......

And I posted this mango picture because I have NEVER purchased or cut up a mango before.  That glob on the left-hand side?  That's the seed!  It's as big as the fruit!

And of course we had to post this picture of a pomegranate.  Neither of us had any desire to count all those seeds.  Caleb gave his 1st grade educated guess of at least 100!!

Here is the chart with the results.  Don't look too closely, I had Caleb spell pomegranate wrong...Oh well, I'll have him spell it right the next time around...just goes to show you not all of us are Webster's Dictionaries!

READING:  As always, there were several new concepts to learn this week for reading.  The teachers manual now has us alternating more bible one day with an reading workbook assignment the next.  It's pretty much incorporated together.  The sight words are now coming from his bible reader.  It's all good....I love that.

He learned about the long vowel "e" spelled "y" and the "ch" sound.

Sight words for this week:  sky, second, land, then, plants, were, and third.  He also learned that some words have one or two syllables and that can impact whether a "y" sounds like and "e" or and "i".  A lot of rules to remember, but he's doing really well.

MATH:  We had another week of learning addition facts.  This was a fun game to help reinforce the learning.  Caleb had to roll two dice and add them up.  Whatever the sum was, he had to mark the box over that number on the grid.  Whichever number got to the top of the page first was the winner.  He was absolutely delighted that HIS number, #6, was the WINNER!!

As I said last week, pattern animals aren't as much fun as they used to be.  He must be getting bored with them.  He keeps insisting that I help.  This week was all about making a frame to go around whatever pattern animal you picked - - he picked the turtle.

SCIENCE:  We learned from our Things Outdoors book about the Ocean and all sorts of creatures in it!  It was fun to learn little facts about some of them.

For our hands-on activity we put a spoon in a clear glass of water and observed how it looked bent  because light reflected from the spoon bends when it leaves the water to go into the air and to your eye.  I must admit to having a little trouble with this one.  I couldn't see it.  We tried a couple of glasses, etc.  It wasn't until a friend of mine showed me.  In the end, I was looking in the wrong place.  I was looking IN the water for the bend, not where the spoon exits the water.  We showed Caleb and he said, "oh, yeah, ok," and went back to what he was doing.  Obviously not a big deal to him!  LOL

MISCELLANEOUS:  Every school room needs a laminator.  Mine did and I didn't even know it.  Ha! I found one at Amazon.com from the recommendation of another home school mom.  I've discovered it is fun to use.  It's come in handy preserving a few items to use again or just for safe-keeping.  One of those things I laminated this week was the sheet for the dice game Caleb played.  Now he uses it with a dry erase marker and can have fun over and over again!

I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying this cooler weather.  I don't mind wearing a jacket sometimes...and I am definitely looking forward to the first fire in the fireplace.

God bless you this week,
Pam
